Summary

A strange darkness grows in Allward。

Even Corayne an-Amarat can feel it, tucked away in her small town at the edge of the sea。

She soon discovers the truth: She is the last of an ancient lineage—and the last hope to save the world from destruction。 But she won’t be alone。 Even as darkness falls, she is joined by a band of unlikely companions:

A squire, forced to choose between home and honor。
An immortal, avenging a broken promise。
An assassin, exiled and bloodthirsty。
An ancient sorceress, whose riddles hide an eerie foresight。
A forger with a secret past。
A bounty hunter with a score to settle。

Together they stand against a vicious opponent, invincible and determined to burn all kingdoms to ash, and an army unlike anything the realm has ever witnessed。

DNFI wanted to like this book。 I really did。 But I just can't get behind it。 I have one big reason for this: this book is not YA fantasy。 This book is not even YA。I know that people are going to disagree with me。 It's literally classified as YA fantasy。 But what I think some people seem to forget is that it's not just age that makes something young adult。 In fact, a book must have young adult content。 It must be a story about young adults, for young adults。 This book? This book was an adult fantasy with a 17 year old main character。 And if it had just been marked as such, I think I could get behind it。 At the very least I could have probably finished it。 But this book is trying so hard to make itself YA without 。 。 。 actually having any sort of YA content。 Just because a book utilizes tropes commonly occurring in one category, does not make it a part of said category。For a YA novel? Too big a main cast with too many POVs and a story spread way too thin。 It's trying way too hard。 I really don't know about this one。 I wanted to like it so bad。 The premise is right up my alley。 I just couldn't do it though。 。。。more

Aveyard's newest fantastical series is definitely exciting and meshes together so many recognizable tropes and feelings。 I saw so many bits of Aveyard's proclaimed inspiration, The Lord of the Rings was well as some Sarah J。 Maas, Tamora Pierce, and even reminded me of movie classics like Indiana Jones。 When a team of heroes goes to stop a growing force of evil but ends up getting slaughtered instead, a new plan must be enacted。 A ragtag bunch is slowly assembled as they travel across Allward, h Aveyard's newest fantastical series is definitely exciting and meshes together so many recognizable tropes and feelings。 I saw so many bits of Aveyard's proclaimed inspiration, The Lord of the Rings was well as some Sarah J。 Maas, Tamora Pierce, and even reminded me of movie classics like Indiana Jones。 When a team of heroes goes to stop a growing force of evil but ends up getting slaughtered instead, a new plan must be enacted。 A ragtag bunch is slowly assembled as they travel across Allward, hoping to close the Spindledoors to other realms that have been opened by an evil force in an attempt to save their world。 I love Aveyard's pitch for her new series - what happens when the A team fails and the B team must save the world? And what if the B team was more reflective of fantasy fans today - more women, more LGBTQIA+, and more characters of color。 I was super excited for Realm Breaker based on pitch alone and it certainly lived up to it's hype, though was slightly disappointing for me in the long run。 Much like it's inspiration, The Lord of the Rings, this first book is all about set up of the world, the quest, and the characters。 While it certainly moved faster than The Fellowship of the Ring, I found the lead in to the characters to be long and I felt like I didn't really get to know them enough to love them until the second half。 And while the first part of Aveyard's pitch rings very true throughout (the ragtag group of heroes that fit so oddly together and yet work), I felt a bit let down by the inclusivity。 Perhaps this will grow with the rest of the series but her foundation of diverse races, sexualities, and genders, while there, was a bit weak。 You can tell that Aveyard's background is writing for the screen。 Her descriptions are vivid and you can almost picture this book as a movie/TV show throughout。 Once I got a better sense of the characters, I cared for them a lot。 I felt like we got a lot of setup of the team of heroes with less focus on our antagonists so am hopeful for more character development in book 2。 Realm Breaker is an exciting addition to the fantasy canon and is a perfectly distracting world for fans of Tolkein, Maas, Pierce, and other fantasy greats。 。。。more

Received as an ARC。 Loved the plot of this book, but what really made it great was the relationship between the characters。

Dare I say I enjoyed Realm Breaker more than Red Queen?! Well yes I did。 Realm Breaker does not disappoint。 It is filled with Lord of the Rings and Game of thrones type vibes。 This is an adventure which follows an unlikely cast of comrades who set out to save their realm from evil。 With a large cast of interesting characters and action packed adventure and I can not wait to read the rest of the series。

THIS BOOK WAS EVERYTHING I’VE BEEN LOOKING FOR AND MORE。 Okay so you all know how much I adored Red Queen, so when I heard Victoria was starting a new fantasy series I WAS SHOOK。 Here’s what I loved: the diverse cast, POVs (more on that later), the dynamic world, and THE PLOT OH MY GOD。 Here’s what I was okay on: Pacing in one minor part (literally。。。 that’s it。。。) When Epic Reads reached out and sent me a Realm Breaker box I was ecstatic。 I filmed my reaction on my TikTok (ACourtOfKayla) if you THIS BOOK WAS EVERYTHING I’VE BEEN LOOKING FOR AND MORE。 Okay so you all know how much I adored Red Queen, so when I heard Victoria was starting a new fantasy series I WAS SHOOK。 Here’s what I loved: the diverse cast, POVs (more on that later), the dynamic world, and THE PLOT OH MY GOD。 Here’s what I was okay on: Pacing in one minor part (literally。。。 that’s it。。。) When Epic Reads reached out and sent me a Realm Breaker box I was ecstatic。 I filmed my reaction on my TikTok (ACourtOfKayla) if you’re interested! I picked this book up last Friday, and I。 COULD。 NOT。 PUT。 IT。 DOWN。 Not gonna lie, I was terrified to start because of the wide cast。 But within the first few chapters I found myself falling love with the wide range of POVs。 I get overwhelmed in books with multiple POVs but found that Realm Breaker rose to the occasion。 I loved every single character and THAT IS RARE。 When I tell you Victoria writes this novel with a wide cast that you can keep up with, I mean it! Next, let’s talk about the LOTRs inspiration。 CHEFS KISS。 The entire idea of the plot being what happens when the everything goes wrong and the B team has to rise up。。。 I SEE YOU VICTORIA I SEE YOU。 It’s clear the amount of work, passion, and love was poured into this novel。 Next, I was absolutely blown away by the world。 Each city, each part had me on the edge of my seat。 I adored every aspect, every location, and had so much fun exploring the world and I CANNOT WAIT FOR MORE。 I picked this book up in a reading slump and blew through it it two days。 I even designed a pair of earrings inspired by the world and a certain weapon。。。Also, THE ENDING?! I NEED THE NEXT BOOK ASAP!! Mmkay so final thoughts, amazing book, probably my favorite read of 2021。 If you’re looking for something to add to your TBR this late spring, ADD REALM BREAKER ASAP! If you’re looking for a wide range of characters with a little something of everyone。。。 look no further。 Victoria, thank you for writing a compelling world that made my life a little brighter。 Thank you for the wide cast of characters and the dynamic world that kinda began to feel like it could become home。 I can’t wait for the next one and I AM TERRIFIED for how it’s all going to end (but mostly excited)。 。。。more

I loved this book so much, but at the same time I can see many aspects that might make people not like it at all。For me it was a fun and exciting adventure with cool characters, monsters, magic and a huge world to be explored。At the same time that I completely recognize that some things were not explained at all in the book, and some characters (good and bad) lacked enough motivation for what they were doing, I just didn't care about that because I wanted to know what was going to happen next。 I I loved this book so much, but at the same time I can see many aspects that might make people not like it at all。For me it was a fun and exciting adventure with cool characters, monsters, magic and a huge world to be explored。At the same time that I completely recognize that some things were not explained at all in the book, and some characters (good and bad) lacked enough motivation for what they were doing, I just didn't care about that because I wanted to know what was going to happen next。 I even enjoyed the tiny bit of romance in it! The book is fast paced and very plot-focused。 So if you prefer character-driven books, this might not be for you。 But if you are like me and love books that are simply a lot of fun, I definitely recommend it! 。。。more

I received and ARC of Realm Breaker and it was the book I didn't know I wanted to read。From the beginning, you're submerged into the action happening in Allward。 A catastrophic threat has emerged and a rag-tag band of unlikely heros come together to face (and try to prevent) the end of their world。 With a special sword and a girl of an ancient bloodline, can they do it?The world building in this novel is impressive。 It reminds me of the depth I felt when visiting Middle Earth or Westeros; there I received and ARC of Realm Breaker and it was the book I didn't know I wanted to read。From the beginning, you're submerged into the action happening in Allward。 A catastrophic threat has emerged and a rag-tag band of unlikely heros come together to face (and try to prevent) the end of their world。 With a special sword and a girl of an ancient bloodline, can they do it?The world building in this novel is impressive。 It reminds me of the depth I felt when visiting Middle Earth or Westeros; there is an intricate history the story is built upon making me want to learn as much as I can about Allward。 The peoples who inhabit the world are diverse and the characters are interesting。 Each chapter is written from the perspective of one of the characters。 I do think the characters are a bit underdeveloped, but this may be because the book is the beginning of a series。 Bottom line, I really enjoyed Realm Breaker。 It was well-paced, action packed and has a really interesting plot。 I am excited to read the rest of the story! 。。。more

Aveyard set out to write a LOTR inspired novel and adventure that was more reflective of its readers。 That is exactly what she accomplished。 A rag-tag bunch of JV warriors coming together to save the world--the originality here! It a total fresh-take on the genre that is relevant and unique。 4。75/5 (docked for a slightly overwhelming beginning) 。。。more

I received an ARC of this book。I have mixed feelings about this book。 While I did enjoy it and found it well-written, I left feeling a bit unsatisfied。 I know this is the first installment to a series and so many things had to be set up, groundwork needed to be laid, and backstory needed to be built。 But I didn't get the sense that our heroes had really accomplished much when I finished the book。 I liked the characters, and rooted for them, and enjoyed their journeys。 But the book didn't really I received an ARC of this book。I have mixed feelings about this book。 While I did enjoy it and found it well-written, I left feeling a bit unsatisfied。 I know this is the first installment to a series and so many things had to be set up, groundwork needed to be laid, and backstory needed to be built。 But I didn't get the sense that our heroes had really accomplished much when I finished the book。 I liked the characters, and rooted for them, and enjoyed their journeys。 But the book didn't really leave me wanting more--it left me feeling more should have happened。 This was not a quick or easy read, so I felt like I put a lot into reading this book and didn't get that much out of it。I also had a hard time with all of the "geography" in the book。 I could not get a handle on it, found it confusing, and wasn't quite sure what was going on--which was a problem since travel was such a huge part of the book。I really don't know if I will read the second installment of this series。 I did like the characters and do want to see what will happen next, but I invested quite a bit of time in this book, and don't want to read more if nothing really happens to them。 I would probably recommend it, but will say that readers should go into it knowing that this is not a fast read and that they will be left waiting for the next installment。 。。。more

An unlikely band of heroes toiling against evil on a quest to save the world。 Pretty classic fantasy tropes at work, but wholly entertaining and fun to read。 I enjoyed the different characters and especially loved exploring the different perspectives on both sides of "good and evil。" Excited for the future of the series。 An unlikely band of heroes toiling against evil on a quest to save the world。 Pretty classic fantasy tropes at work, but wholly entertaining and fun to read。 I enjoyed the different characters and especially loved exploring the different perspectives on both sides of "good and evil。" Excited for the future of the series。 。。。more

Disclaimer- I don’t usually like reading fantasy (I’d rather watch it tbh), and I also don’t particularly enjoy series。 BUT- Aveyard’s Red Queen series was awesome and so I leaped at the chance to read her newest one。 “Realm Breaker” has a bit for everybody- pirates, assassins, bounty hunters, wizards, villains who don’t die, magical zombie like creatures, power hungry queens, etc so there’s obviously characters that you can root for。 Personally, I wanted more slow burn villain romance, but that Disclaimer- I don’t usually like reading fantasy (I’d rather watch it tbh), and I also don’t particularly enjoy series。 BUT- Aveyard’s Red Queen series was awesome and so I leaped at the chance to read her newest one。 “Realm Breaker” has a bit for everybody- pirates, assassins, bounty hunters, wizards, villains who don’t die, magical zombie like creatures, power hungry queens, etc so there’s obviously characters that you can root for。 Personally, I wanted more slow burn villain romance, but that’s just me。 The book definitely builds the world and sets up for the series, so stay tuned! 。。。more
